Who is Al-Rihla Images …
‘Al-Rihla’ is Arabic for ‘The Journey’ or ‘The Voyage’. The name was taken from and in memory of ibn Battutah, the famous Moroccan Muslim scholar and traveler, who lived in the 14th century. Ibn Battutah is often considered to be one of the greatest travelers ever and the distance that he covered surpassed that of his predecessors and his near-contemporary, Marco Polo. Despite these achievements, ibn Battutah is seldom mentioned in history books that we were taught in schools. Go figure …
Al-Rihla Images is my way of documenting my journey or voyage through life and my travels to the Islamic World. My dream is to cover, as much as possible, the countries or regions that were once part of the great Islamic empires, which stretched from Al-Andalus [present day Spain] to Central and South Asia.
Who am I …
My name is Chaerul Imran Bakri. Most people call me by my second name, Imran, unless they can pronounce my first name
. I live and work in Singapore, a tropical island city-state located at the southern tip of Malaysia. I was born in Singapore. However, I was informed that my paternal ancestors came from Central Java in Indonesia, whereas my maternal ancestors came from Hadhramaut [in present day Yemen] and Central Java.
